View northeast to Strand Fiord Formation southeast of Plateau Lake, Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut. The Strand Fiord Formation is a succession of Cretaceous volcanic rocks in the Carboniferous to Late Cretaceous Sverdrup Basin, Canadian Arctic Islands. In this view the beds are dipping away from the camera, with the result that we are looking obliquely at the bases of beds. Columnar jointed flows occur at several horizons; one of these is near the base of the continuous exposure. Light coloured outcrops within the talus slope are sandstones of the Cretaceous Bastion Ridge and Hassel formations. Gigapixel image acquisition supported by the NSF GEODE project, DUE 1323419, through loan of gigapan equipment to C.A. Evenchick. The image was acquired by Evenchick as part of the Western Arctic Project of the GEM2 Program of the Geological Survey of Canada, Natural Resources Canada.
