Sequence of diagenesis and brittle and ductile deformation recorded in chert slab from the Miocene Monterey Formation. Thin layers of hard chert (black) formed in finely laminated diatomite were subjected to horizontal shortening and vertical compaction - they deformed brittly while the originally porous diatomite was ductily deformed. Later the entire thing was silicified to chert. https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Richard-Behl/publication/285379806_The_origin_of_chert_in_the_Monterey_Formation_of_California_USA/links/5669a37908aea0892c49b094/The-origin-of-chert-in-the-Monterey-Formation-of-California-USA.pdf
