Opposite the Boar's Tusk and the Killpecker dunes, in the heart of Wyoming's Green River Basin, White Mountain showcases outcrops of the upper part of the (freshwater) Tipton Shale and the overlying Wilkins Peak Member (hypersaline) of the Green River Formation. The strata are Eocene in age and were deposited in a massive intermountain lake. They include "oil shales" (really marlstone with kerogen in it), true shales, deltaic sandstones, and stromatolitic limestone.
