Looking downstream on the Potomac River from the southern end of Billy Goat Trail, loop A, in Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, Maryland. The other side of the river is Virginia. On the hill is Madeira School, and the confluence with Difficult Run is directly across the river in the narrow valley. Rocks in this area are of the Mather Gorge Formation, a series of metamorphosed and partially melted deep-sea sedimentary rocks.
