On August 17, 1959, the Hebgen Lake Earthquake caused this mountain to slide down across the valley, burying a number of campers and created a lake that is now slowly draining. I lived in Ashton Idaho, about 60 miles away and felt the earthquake and visited this site a few days afterward. Today there is a visitor center located on the slide debris. http://www.yellowstonepark.com/yellowstone-earthquake-of-1959/
