This is looking down at the Blue Hole in Fort Valley from Massanutten Mountain East. This area is known to geologist as the Massanutten Synclinorium which is a massive, doubley plunging syncline found in the Valley and Ridge Province of Virginia. The large valley featured in this gigapan is the topographic expression of the less-resistant shaley trough of the syncline. The limbs of the Massanutten Synclinorium are composed of nearly vertical beds of Massanutten Sandstone which stand approximately 1200 feet above sea level. The exposure is annoyingly inconsistent as the lighting kept changing on me. The camera really picks out subtle light changes that my eye doesn't. View of the camera is approximately south west. Image made as part of the MAGIC project (Mid-Atlantic Geo-Imagery Collection).
