This panorama was taken at Government Island, Stafford County, Virginia. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Aquia Sandstone was mined at Government Island and used extensively in the construction of buildings in Washington D.C., including the White House and the U.S. Capitol. In time, the sandstone fell out of use because of its susceptibility to weathering. The Aquia Creek Sandstone is Creataceous in age, and is composed of rounded, fine to coarse quartz grains cemented by silica.
