Labeatis Fossae Mosaic Images Used U10_074879_1912_XN_11N044W G06_020443_1916_XI_11N044W F05_037783_1918_XN_11N044W This image is part of the Lunae Planum plateau and specifically targets the Labeatis Fossae region. Tectonic "Fossae" (Trenches): The suffix 11N044W in one of the 3 images the ID puts this right in the heart of the Labeatis Fossae. These are spectacular "grabens"—long, linear valleys where the ground has dropped between two parallel faults. They look like giant, straight-edged scars on the surface, caused by the crust being pulled apart (extensional tectonics). Ancient Cratered Surface: The "basement" rock here is Hesperian-aged basalt. You'll see a mix of "fresh" craters with sharp rims and "degraded" craters that have been partially filled in by billions of years of dust and sand.
