Here, the hard metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Piedmont province meet the Coastal Plain, and the James River falls over a series of rapids and small waterfalls. Expansive pavement exposures of Mississippian-aged Petersburg Granite (bearing xenoliths, schlieren, pegmatite dikes, and two prominent fracture sets) are drilled into to make 1-2 m wide potholes. This overview shot of the site is taken from the Lee Bridge downstream of the park.
