This image was taken at what was a location of iron mining that took place in the Van Buren Furnace area during the 19th century. The rock here is Ridgeley Sandstone, forming a "hogback" ridge. This very crumbly coarse sandstone contains large amounts of iron (reddish-brown coloration) and manganese (black coloration). The iron ore was mined within a particular span of bedding within this formation. Tailings are all over the place.
