This GigaPan records the contact between the Oriskany and Needmore formation. The Oriskany is a calcareous to calcarenaceous quartz arenite with some pebbly zones. Characteristics of the Oriskany is the white-grayish color which often shows rusty oxidation surfaces. Brachiopod biomoldic pores are also a diagnostic feature of the Oriskany. The Needmore is a shale-rich sequence of gray to black shale. This contact has been interpreted as a major Appalachian stratigraphic surface which records a major eustatic sea level change, known as the Wallbridge Unconformity. This surface indicates the initial phases of the Acadian Orogeny which deposited mud across a wide area of the Appalachian Basin.
