Hueco Tanks State Park is a Tertiary (35 Ma) instrusion composed primiarly of syenite associated with Rio Grande Rift extension. The highly fractured nature of the outcrop, due to either regional tectonic forces, variable internal plutonic cooling rates, or both, make it a favorite for rock climbers from around the world.
